Network and Telecommunications

I am going to talk about the topic of network and telecommunications.

  1. A telecommunications network is any arrangement where
  • a sender transmit a message
  • to a receiver
  • over a channel
  • consisting of some sort of medium
2. Network components alternatives

Network component alternatives consist of network, media, processors, software, channel and topology.

3.Telecommunication Processors

The most common type of communication processors is modems.
  • converts a digital signal to an analog frequency
  • transmitted over phone lines
  • then back into digital signal

Types of Communication networks
  • Local Area Network (LAN)
  • Wide Area Network (WAN)
  • Virtual Private
  • Client/Network
  • Peer-to-Peer

Local Area Network (LAN)
  • connect computer within a limited physical area.

 Wide Area Network (WAN)
  • Telecommunication network that covers a large geographic area.

 Virtual Private Network (VPN)
  • used to establish the secure intranets and extranets.

Client/Servers Network
  1. Clients
  • End user personal computers or networked computers.
     2. Servers
  • used to managed the networks.

Peer-to-Peer Networks
  • central server architecture.

Data Management

Today we will talk about the evolution of data management technology from traditional file to data warehouse.

Traditional File

The traditional file is containing only specific types of data record by one or more specialized data files.

Database Management (DBMS)

DBMS can generate data into databases that can be accessed by different programs and serves as software interface between users and databases.

Logical Data Elements

Logical Data Element use character or bit such as single alphabetic, numeric or other symbol to represent element. It contains field or data item to group related character. It also record grouping all the fields used to the attributes of an entity.

Information System-Software

Today we will define the difference between general purpose application software and function-specific application software

General purpose application software
General purpose application software is application that provide general tasks for end users. Example: Spreadsheet, word processing, media player and etc.
Spreadsheet
Spreadsheet is a table contain of rows and columns. The relationships between cells are called formulas and the name of the cell call labels. U can key in words and figure that u want to. Mainly end user uses it to make a table or a price list.

Word processing
A general computer will have a word processing program called word processor. There is a program which u can insert word and delete text. There are also have function of cut/copy and paste, adjust the size and margins of the words, print and etc. It also can save as a electronically document and transfer as a soft copy. It also can connect to a printer can print out as hardcopy.
Function-Specific Application Software
Function-Specific Application Software have function to limited end user but their can perform more professional to specific user. Function-Specific Application Software has lesser purpose but it has greater capabilities.
Business application software must choose based on the business type or category itself. A computer must have the requirements necessary in order to run the software properly. Normally, business application software used to save down the sale or customer information and also the purchases and supplier information. It can be more convenient for accountant for doing the final year-end report (Income statement).

Information System Hardware-revolution from mainframe computer systems to microcomputer systems

Today, we would like to explain about the revolution of computer systems from mainframe computer systems  to microcomputer systems.

Mainframe Computer Systems
A mainframe is large in size. It is also fast and powerful computer systems. Mainframe computer systems have large primary storage capacity and high transaction processing. It can carry out millions of instructions per second.

Mainframe computer systems is widely used as superservers for large client, server networks, high-volume internet websites.
Mainframe computer systems is becoming a popular computing platform for data mining, warehousing and electronic commerce applications.
You can refer to this website (http://www.vikingwaters.com/htmlpages/MFHistory.htm) to know about the history for mainframe computer systems.

Midrange Computer Systems
Midrange computer systems is high-end network servers that handle large-scale processing of business applications. However, midrange computer systems are not as powerful as mainframe. Besides that, midrange computer systems are less expensive to buy, operate and maintain.

Mainframe computer systems are often used to manage large internet websites, corporate intranets and extranets, integrated, enterprise-wide applications. In addition, it is also used as front-end servers to assist mainframes with telecommunications and networks.

Microcomputer Systems
Microcomputer systems are usually called as personal computer or PC. The computing power now exceeds that of the mainframes of previous generations. PC is also relatively inexpensive. Microcomputer systems are the networked professional workstations used by business processions. Usually there is only 1 user for microcomputer systems.
